Mid-Atlantic 4R Nutrient Stewardship Association (MA4R) is known for moving the needle in 4R Nutrient Stewardship. 4R Nutrient Stewardship is a framework for applying fertilizers with the Right Source, at the Right Rate, at the Right Time, and in the Right Place to optimize crop production, profitability, and environmental sustainability. One way, MA4R has been moving the needle, is through the use of 4R Vouchers. These vouchers are good for $1,000 worth of nutrient data management or advanced nutrient management planning. Funds go directly to a trusted advisor to assist a farmer for free or at a reduced cost. The purpose of the voucher allows any farm, no matter the size or level of 4R implementation, to organize their data or plan out how to utilize an advanced nutrient management practice for their business and showcase how the practice would benefit their farming operation.
During the summer of 2025, 25 farmers and trusted advisors utilized this opportunity to plan 4R activities on 4,783.53 acres in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Planning vouchers allowed farmers and trusted advisors to; develop zones for variable rate, build Real-Time Kinematic field boundaries, sample soil via a grid, plan to utilize a bio stimulant product, utilize a modeling program for nutrient applications, compare chicken litter to a high efficiency nitrogen product, split their nitrogen application, and understand see and spray technology.
To help move the needle in adoption, cost-share funds were distributed at an average of $13.65 an acre for those who implemented the planned practice. In total 44% of the total acreage was implemented with the practices mentioned above. With the implemented acres, these farmers and trusted advisors reduced 6,195.76 pounds of nitrogen and 417.68 pounds of phosphorus.
MA4R has secured funding for 100 vouchers and the opportunity for cost-share from a 2024 National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Grant. MA4R will have vouchers for the 2025/2026 small grains season and 2026 summer crop season announced later this summer. If you would like to learn more about these vouchers, visit here.
